On Saturday 29 November 2025, despite a gloomy weather forecast, 50 of our members boarded the coach for our trip to Stratford. The trip had originally been arranged for 2024, but that market was cancelled due the high winds of storm Darrah. The weather this time was not as bad!
By the time we reached the coach park, the rain had stopped, and we set out to explore. In typical u3a style, the first stop was for coffee and cake!

The stalls were set out over three locations, with Christmas music playing and a cheery, festive atmosphere among the Christmas lights. A large variety of goods were on sale and there were plenty of shops to explore too. There was a permanent Christmas shop which had a beautiful selection of Christmas decorations. To complete the atmosphere the stallholders were dressed in period Victorian costumes.

There was a wide choice of venues for lunch, as well as street food on sale, although it was very busy so there were queues for each location.

The sun came out, making a stroll along the waterside a pleasant diversion from the crowds. We watched a narrow boat negotiate the lock with several swans nearby. Some of the members explored the Shakespearian attractions too.

We arrived home in Bicester around 5.30p.m. It was a good day out but perhaps we should avoid Christmas markets on Saturdays in future!
